From a review of the writings of Kingsley Amis, a big cocktail guy in the Seventies:


...all sorts of interesting experiments were under way in the clubhouse. Experiments with hangovers, for example, kingly ones: “I took bicarbonate with a vodka chaser. My companion said, ‘Let’s see what’s happening in your stomach,’ and poured the remnant of the vodka into the remnant of the bicarbonate solution. The mixture turned black and gave off smoke.”
