There's something that really appeals to me about this photo: I think part of it is imagining waking up, looking out my window, and seeing that iceberg.

This is wonderful. It makes me want a glass of scotch, and to take a walk in Scotland. Or, even, to drink a glass of scotch while on a walk in Scotland.
I'd say that's an effective ad (maybe even the best ad of the year).

I was looking for the final scenes of only Godfather part II, but this--the final scenes of part I, followed by the final scenes of part II--isn't a bad juxtaposition, and it's certainly got everything I wanted to see.
If I were an actor, and I had to get all sad on cue, this is one of the things that I'd think about.

The four drank out of beer mugs. Mr. Obama had a Bud Lite, Sergeant Crowley had Blue Moon, Professor Gates drank Sam Adams Light and Mr. Biden, who does not drink, had a Buckler nonalcoholic beer. (Mr. Biden put a lime slice in his beer. Sergeant Crowley, for his part, kept with Blue Moon tradition and had a slice of orange in his drink.)

The glamour of food has made it something of a class leveler in America, a fact that many of these shows implicitly celebrate. Television likes nothing better than to serve up elitism to the masses, paradoxical as that might sound. How wonderful is it that something like arugula can at the same time be a mark of sophistication and be found in almost every salad bar in America? Everybody wins!

There are tons of quotable bits in Michael Pollan's "Out of the Kitchen, Onto the Couch"; this happened to be one of my favorites, because I really, really like arugula.

This (and the video for "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'") are pure genius (no pun &c.).

I made myself using Mad Men Yourself (via), as if I were on Mad Men, and I found that I looked nothing like myself.
But I have a nice drink; I guess that's something.

This--orecchiette with cauliflower, bacon, and breadcrumbs--was one of our favorite dishes last winter. And it's really a winter-y dish: hearty and filling and rich.
But so we've now entered into the winter phase of the San Francisco summer, and cauliflower happened to be at the market this past weekend, so I thought, why not? And we ate it tonight, and the cauliflower was caramelized, and the pasta captured all of the breadcrumbs and cheese, and there was bacon fat all over everything, and it was so, so great.

Dinner tonight: homemade pita bread, hummus, and a tomato/cucumber salad. Fresh and lovely.
